2024 CPC in the books…..

Well, everyone, another CPC has concluded, and while we didn’t have the turnout we expected (due to economic and health issues), we had a solid field, and everyone had a great time!! We want to give some shoutouts to a variety of people (in no particular order):

Wolfpack, Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets To Meet In Military Division Championship Game

Wheelchair basketball means so much to Donald Burns.

So much — that about three months after having his left leg amputated, he decided he was going to play for the Wolfpack Vets in this weekend’s National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Military Division National Championships at Turnstone Center for Adults & Children With Disabilities in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Despite being in pain and his leg still healing, the 44-year-old Marine Corps veteran went ahead and made his military team debut.

“I didn’t wait for the release,” says Burns on Saturday morning.

Burns and the Wolfpack went 2-0 during Saturday’s second day and will end up playing in Sunday’s championship game. The Wolfpack Vets defeated the Florida Renegades, 46-43, in overtime in one semifinal, while the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets defeated ParaSport Spokane, 58-49, in the other semifinal.

After letting an eight-point fourth-quarter lead slip away, the Wolfpack closed out and knocked off the Florida Renegades, who had been undefeated and were trying to repeat after winning the inaugural Military Division title last year at Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Ala.

Burns was determined to play this weekend. That’s despite having surgery Jan. 16 and having his left leg amputated.

He’d play a quarter and then take a quarter off to help it heal. But it was still swelling and tender to touch, and he admitted he was in a lot of pain.

“I’m giving it a break, trying not to stress out,” Burns says. “But you can’t help but play hard on the court.”

Burns, who served as an operations chief from 1998 to 2019, has played wheelchair basketball since 2019. He says his foot was injured during a training accident, and he had a Lisfranc injury, or an injury to the foot where metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus. He says neither the Marine Corps or Navy approved him for surgery, so a lot of bone decay occurred. He also tried a mid-foot fusion, but eventually the foot fell apart and doctors said it wasn’t salvageable.

So finally, after missing last year’s NWBA Adult Division and Military Division Championships, he decided to go ahead and play in the Military Division tourney this year. No matter the pain. He wanted that camaraderie again — and he liked his Wolfpack team.

“You know, in the military, there’s a lot of camaraderie,” Burns says. “And you have a team. So, you know who you can rely on for what. And that still applies on the court. You know what you can get out of one person. And you know what you can get out of the next person. So, you play to their strengths.”

USAGA classifications as of 3/1/24 will determine classifications for this event. While the USGA classifications are improving, we don’t feel they adequately cover the field at this time. Senior low net will be a 50+ age group. Winners of Men/Women overall and Senior Low Net are not eligible for individual classification awards. Individual classification awards will be based on low gross (adjusted). The USGA Rules of Golf will be strictly adhered to in all instances, along with imposed local exceptions, which will be announced before the tournament. The maximum score for each hole is double par. Players are asked to pick up and record the double par as total strokes on a hole. Tee positions are based on rating/slope, not yardages. This is the most equitable way of setting tee positions for each classification. Considerations for daily F&B credits Each player will be given three redeemable $10 certificates for meals. Three total will be given to each participant, and they may be used on any tournament day. These certificates can be used at any F&B facility at OrangeTree, including the beverage carts. They can NOT be used at the awards banquet. Certificates have no cash value, and no change will be made for redemptions. Local course rules and exceptions will be submitted after this coming week.

2024 Conquerors Paragolf Championships Update

Tournament update 04/20/2024

We have revised the schedule of events (below) for the week
- Practice Rounds Monday, May 13, 2024. Call the Proshop to book tee times after 3/1/2024 (Rates are $75)
- Player Appreciation Reception: Monday May 13, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
- Round one of the CPC: Tuesday, May 14, 2024, 8:00 a.m. Reverse Shotgun
- Round two of the CPC: Wednesday, May 15, 2024, 8:00 a.m. (Tee Times)
- Final Round of the CPC: Thursday, May 16, 2024, 8:00 a.m. (Tee Times)
- 2024 Conquerors Awards Banquet: Thursday, May 16, 2024, 6:00 p.m. Orange Tree Golf Resort
The adaptive golf clinic scheduled for Monday will be rescheduled for mid-June at OrangeTree resort due to a lack of commitment from the adaptive entities previously contacted.
Discounts on OrangeTree Resort condo units will expire on April 30th. Book now to secure your accommodations with discount code TIUGRP.
There are still a couple of registration spots open as of today’s date. Feel free to share this page with anyone who you feel would like to participate. Full registration fees of $300 are due upon registration.
Orange Tree Golf Resort will have a massage therapist available each morning for those needing some “warmup” assistance!
Tee assignments for the first round will be handed out at the player’s reception on Monday night, along with tournament gifts.
We will have Phoenix TV coverage (Channel 3 and Channel 5) during the first round on Tuesday, so look sharp!!!
Food Vouchers: We will be distributing the food vouchers with your tournament bag on Monday night. Each player will received three food vouchers that can be used on Tuesday through Thursday. They cannot be used for the reception or the awards banquet.
Remember that as a WR4GD approved event, if you want your scores to be posted for points, we will need your WR4GD pass number and your USGA GHIN numbers.

As of 3/15, we have twelve players from outside the US entered into the field, highlighted by our first player from Pakistan, Mujeeb Khan, and 8 players from Canada.
