Schedule for Conquerors Paragolf Championships Announced

We have announced the schedule for the upcoming Conquerors event. Please note that the non-golf events dress code will be “golf casual”:

  • Tee times for your practice round on Sunday 4/2/2023 will be available for booking starting 3/17/2023
  • Please note that all registered players and registered guests will be provided with “grab and go” lunches on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
  • Round one on Monday 4/3/2023 (all divisions including associates) will start at 8:30 a.m. shotgun start
  • Player appreciation dinner will take place at 4:00 pm in the Forty Niner CC ramada (located next door to the ProShop). Tickets will be emailed to you prior to the tournament
  • Round two tee times on Tuesday 4/4/2023 will begin at 9:30 a.m. from the first and tenth tees. Your times will be available and posted in the ramada as well as the Golf Status tournament site.
  • Round three tee times for Wednesday 4/5/2023 will begin at 9:30 a.m. from the first and tenth tees. Your times will be available and posted in the ramada as well as the Golf Status tournament site after Round Two.
  • The Conquerors Award banquet will take place 4/5/2023 at FireTruck Brewery located at 4746 E Grant Rd, Tucson, AZ 85712 with a cash bar opening at 4:00 pm and dinner starting at 5:00 p.m. Awards ceremony will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be emailed to you prior to the tournament.

A quick update drop for this year’s events…..

  1. Update on yardages and tees for WR4GD rankings
    • We will be making a final decision on the tees that will be used by each classification at Forty Niner CC in the next few weeks based on then current registrations. We have determined that we will be using four different tee decks for the tournament that will be marked in the GolfStatus app for your smart device and will be in compliance with the USGA requirements with regard to course ratings.
  2. New travel information on getting to Tucson (pricing information courtesy of Kayak.com)
    • Airfare: With the current situation with the airlines in the US, it appears that there is a reduction in airfares coming between now and the tourney date.
      • Following are some of the price ranges we just found for inbound on Saturday 4/1 and outbound on Thursday 4/6 (incorporates a Saturday night stay which reduces the price somewhat
        • LAX $180-$280, IAH $355-$375, MKE $463-$569, BOS $440-$500, DFW $350-$400, SEA $450-$500, MCO $450-$500, ORD $420-$460, DTW $430-$520, ATL $580-$700.
    • Car Rentals: Due to the tournament schedule, we are now seeing a reduction in rental pricing. For 4/1 – 4/6, pricing is running between $200 to $240 on economy class vehicles.
    • Hotels: Hotel prices are currently predicted to be between $100-$400 per night depending on the class of hotel. It should be noted that our host hotel, Wyndham Westward Look Resort, has a rack rate posted on Kayak for this period at $226 and we have a confirmed rate at this 5-star resort at $129!!! Please be aware that there a limited number of rooms we can hold in this block until 3/2/2023. At that time all unreserved rooms in this block will be released to the public, and regular rates will prevail starting on that date.
  3. Player’s reception and awards banquet
    • Since we will be in a “shotgun” start on Monday 4/3/2023 (Tues/Wed will be split tee times off one and ten), we obviously will all get off the course at the same time, making the scheduling of the reception at little easier. As of today, we are scheduled to start the reception promptly at 5:00 pm.
    • We will have updated information on the awards banquet in the next update
  4. Using the 49er Health Club
    • Please keep in mind that if you wish to use the 49er health club during the tournament, we need your confirmation prior to 3/25/2013 so can book the facility accordingly. This is a member facility so we need to extend every courtesy we can to the 49er members.

WAGR

First, many are asking about WR4GD rankings…you can download the confirmation schedule from the EDGA site, here. While we’re on the subject, you can also apply for your Access Pass (if you want world ranking points) here. Remember that our scoring software (Golf Status) will automatically update your GHIN index right up to the day before the tournament. If you don’t have a GHIN, you should contact your local course or utilize the USGA website to get one established. In order to compete for trophies and points, you are required to have a USGA GHIN number. If you do not, you will be entered with a “0” handicap and will compete in low gross competition only.

2023 Conquerors Paragolf Championships Update

REGISTRATION

Registration is OPEN but spots are going quickly!  Please be advised that registrations will be restricted to the first 72 entries.  The Registration page for the 2023 Conquerors is located at https://events.golfstatus.com/event/7bfb237d-f85a-48b3-9255-d289261b03ae/details/registration-details.  Registration fees are $275 and extra meal vouchers are $50.

New this year will be access to the Forty Niner fitness facility and aquatic center.  Access is complimentary however you need to register prior to 3/1/2023 to acquire passes.  Passes are valid for the practice round on Sunday through the final round on Wednesday.  Passes will not be available after 3/1/2023, however, you can use the facilities but will have to purchase normal passes from the club.

The Conquerors’ Player reception will be held at Forty Niner Country Club at 5:30 pm on Monday 4/4/2023 in the Clubhouse Ramada (next to the ProShop).   The reception dinner will  be held starting at 5:30 pm with a cash bar happy hour starting at 4:30 pm

First and second-round tee times will be the same with the exception being you will tee of on the opposite nine for the second round.  Standings will determine final round tee times.

We will be including an associates division this year (for “normies”) which will include player guests and sponsors. Just go to the registration page and choose “Associates Division” in the classification box.  Registration is the same as participants’ registration.  The format for associates will be 2 ball alternate shot.  Double-par pickup will be observed in this division only.  We will award two places in each flight.  Associate division will be paired with players in the same division.

The Awards Banquet will be held at Firetruck Brewery (Midtown) at 4746 E Grant Rd, Tucson, AZ 85712 on Wednesday 4/5/2023.  The restaurant is approximately 15 minutes from Forty Niner Country Club.  Reception (cash bar) will begin at 6:00 pm with dinner served at 6:30 pm.  Awards ceremony will commence at 7:30 pm.  Make sure to make your menu selection by 3/15/2023 on our website.  We will have themed beef, chicken, and vegan options.  The dress is golf casual.  There will be a cash bar and this event will be limited to 125 participants.

Pre-round considerations:  We ask that you warm up no sooner than one hour before your assigned tee time.  The range is on the south side of the club parking lot.  The putting green/short game area is on the north side of the clubhouse.  All carts will be staged immediately next to the pro shop.

All Adaptive Golfers….it’s time for Tucson!

Here’s hoping that you and yours had a great Thanksgiving.  We’re pleased to announce that registration for the 2023 Conquerors Paragolf Championship is now OPEN!!!  Player registration can be found here. The tournament will take place on April 2nd thru the 5th at Forty Niner Country Club (in east Tucson) home of past PGA and LPGA events.  
Forty Niner Country Club, a William Francis Bell-designed classic, is an established club on the eastern side of Tucson. The semi-private facility is inviting to golfers of all skill levels with the traditional layout and gently rolling terrain (read: Extremely Adaptive Friendly!) which allows members and players alike the option to walk the course. Nestled between the Catalina and Rincon Mountains, the course meanders along a wooded riverbed with fairways lined by mature trees and native desert shrubbery. The golf course provides a visually inviting 18-hole course layout while providing a solid challenge for all players. Recent course renovations have only improved an already outstanding experience.

We are going to offer free passes for access to the 49er Fitness Club for participants as well as the 49er aquatic facility.  We will post a complete summary on our website as soon as the details are finalized.

Once again, our host hospitality property will be the Wyndham Westward Look Resort located 20 minutes west of the golf facility.  As many of you who stayed there last year know, the Westward Look is a 5-star first-class resort with just about every amenity you should desire.  This year’s rates and the booking page are posted and can be accessed here.
The Player’s reception and the awards banquet information should be finalized in the next couple of weeks.  We will update the tournament site/social media at that time with registrations, sponsor info, hospitality info and links, and event schedules.

This year’s Conquerors theme will be the legendary Conquerors of Sparta.  Not unlike the theme on which we based our awards last year, the Conquistadors of Spain, we will style the theme and awards based on the Greek city/state of Sparta.  We will choose a new Conquerors theme each and every year as an ongoing program.WE ARE ALL WARRIORS SPARTANS MOTIVATIONAL TEASER - YouTube

It can be easy to overlook the daily challenges facing people impacted by a disability. The National Center on Accessibility (NCA) estimated in 2010 that more than 56.7 million people in the United States, or 19 percent of the population, are disabled in some way. That is a large group of people who, like those without disabilities, desire to live active and fulfilling lives.  

Tracy Ramin became a disabled athlete in 1998 as a result of a tragic car accident that left him as a below the knee amputee. Since, he has made it his life’s mission to have golf included in the Paralympic games. Ramin is Captain of the U.S. ParaGolf team. Ramin has won over a dozen tournaments in the last 10 years with the last one being at the Georgia State Golf Association’s inaugural Adaptive Golf Championship, a World Ranking 4 Golfers with disabilities event held at the Bobby Jones course in Atlanta, GA. Ramin is currently ranked 6th in the USA among the WR4GD rankings.

Golf offers an opportunity for people with disabilities to do just that. The NCA believes that there are probably at least 8 million people with disabilities who would consider playing golf or returning to the game if given the opportunity. Think of the positive implications for the game if that estimate is even close to accurate.    

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1992. The law was made to guarantee access for people with disabilities to all facilities that cater to the public. More specific guidelines for golf courses were developed in 1992. The details of the law and its impacts on golf facilities can be reviewed in the article, “Fear and Loathing and the ADA.”

2022 Conquistador Paragolf Championships is officially in the books!

Our 2022 Championships came to a successful end on Thursday April 14 at the El Conquistador Golf Club in sunny Tucson. Hats off to our 2022 Men’s Champion, Robert Walden and our 2022 Woman’s Champion, Amanda Cunha! Although we had some challenging winds in the first round, the famous Tucson weather held true with sunny calm days for the balance of the tournament. We had quite a few first time classification winners this year and everyone had a great time.

New this year are the Inspirational awards which were given to those individuals who represent what’s best about Adaptive Golf as well as making a difference in the game. This year’s Men’s winner was Danny Acosta, who has achieved his lifelong goal of becoming a PGA professional/teacher. The Women’s winner was shared by Norma Trujillo, Deborah Smith, Sarah Larson, and Bailey Bish. These exemplary ladies are the faces of this year’s TIU4ALL theme, “Women of Substance in Adaptive Golf“. Our hats are off to all of you for what you’ve accomplished this year.

We need to thank our golf hosts, El Conquistador Golf & Tennis/Town of Oro Valley and our long time catering partners, Firetruck Brewery for their great support and hosting the events for the week. A special shoutout to our most ardent supporter, Jim Click, for your support of these superb adaptive athletes.

Finally, we’re already starting the planning for the 2023 Paragolf Championships which will take place April 17-20, 2023. We are in the process of negotiating a three year deal with a new golf facility that is going to be spectacular! We’re hoping to make an announcement on this within the next couple of weeks.

A million thanks to all of you who were able to attend this year and we ardently hope that you all can attend next year’s event as all. Fairways and Greens!!
